Glasnevin Garden, Dublin

Private Client

The original 1950s garden was laid out as a plant person's paradise, but the layout needed rationalising. Through simplifying the levels a hierarchy of spaces was organised. We allowed for a greater degree of play space, socialising and a series of steel raised planting beds.

Our design intention was to retain and enhance the character of the original space whilst simultaneously organising the garden so that it worked for a diversity of users; a family of four including their chickens and whippet.

Two active children stipulated their needs as high priority in the form of a pond for frogs, and a lawn to kick about and cartwheel. Whereas, the adults requested space to socialise and plant with the intention of developing additional elements in the garden over time, such as a stone wall and barbecue area.

By simplifying the basic layout of the garden, the new levels created a greater sense of privacy and a sequence of garden rooms to be enjoyed.
