Village Square, Darndale
Private Client
Our approach focused on creating an open, welcoming space for the community to enjoy—a place where people of all ages, from infants to the elderly, could relax, connect, and feel secure.
Clear sight-lines were prioritised to enhance safety, complemented by the use of robust materials and pollinator-friendly plants and trees. The design sought to embody a shared vision and values for the community, rooted in the belief that a space designed successfully for children becomes a space that benefits everyone.
The site analysis served as a foundation for identifying potential funding opportunities, including support from arts organisations. We prioritised inviting play and gathering areas, recognising the potential of socially conscious design as a driver of positive change. Drawing inspiration from the community’s strong engagement with activities such as dance, boxing, and horse riding, we used these interests as a springboard for creative ideas that may provide funding for artists to develop work in the square.
One concept was to incorporate horse stable footprints into the paving design, serving not only as a nod to local culture but also as a playful element. These could double as hopscotch patterns, encouraging movement, incidental play, and further opportunities for artistic expression to be introduced into the space.
This project remains ongoing, emphasising collaboration with the community and empowering locals to take an active role in shaping the village square through art and landscape architecture. The adapted planting scheme was lead by the client.
